Focal Points – Concentration and Isolation
Here is today’s in call project, Exploring Focal Points through Concentration and Isolation.
The horse and jumps are an example of isolation: the horse is isolated from the jumps by difference.
The example of concentration is, as can be seen, through the concentration of many hats.
Design 1 – redesigned
Above is the edited version of the second design (made entirely by diagonal lines). Instead of having the design end in a short diagonal, the line was moved to the opposite diagonal and lengthened, creating more movement across the page. This was suggested in the critique on Monday.
First Four Designs
These four designs were chosen from the 100 sketches shown earlier. They proved to be somewhat better than the others on account of the balance between the positive and negative spaces (although of course there is always room for improvement!)
THe first of the four designs chosen from the sketches is made up of horizontal and vertical lines only. This design was chosen on account of its simplicity and asymmetrical balance, as well as the repetition of the descending lines and their rhythm.
There were no critiques for this in class.
The second design is diagonals only, and this design was chosen on account of its effort in making the diagonal movement go in the opposite direction of the actual diagonal lines.
Critiques from class:
- the viewer feels the need to see more of the design
- would like to see it take up more space (more positive space)
- not very balanced
- perhaps just one more line added (opposite diagonal?) to help the balance
This third design (curved lines only) was chosen on account of its balanced minimalism. The idea of this was to make the negative space work as hard as the positive space, which it does.
Critiques:
Although it is a single line, it is well placed.
The last design contains all vertical or horizontal, diagonal, and curved lines. This particular design was chosen because it held a better balance (along with a more interesting shape) than the others.
Critique notes:
- good asymmetrical balanced
- too much continued negative space
- interesting shape
- a little awkward
- no physical division of space was not found bothersome
- not the best use of the space
100 sketches for Subdivision of a Groundsheet
For each of the four designs, I drew twenty-five sketches. The first design is make entirely with vertical and horizontal lines, the second by only diagonal lines, the third by only curved lines, and the fourth by all three together.
An Introduction
Welcome to The Blog! You will find here the trials and errors of a student, as well as the successful (and inspirational) designs of the masters. This is primarily for 2-D design, but other categories of design may slip in.
About the student: Cecilia is a designer of everything and anything, from rooms and accessories to black and white squares, as well as an avid horseperson. A student-athlete on the equestrian team, she is learning the difficulties in juggling homework and out of town competitions, at the same time tasting the fruits of hard labor through blue ribbons and A’s (along with a few hard knocks).
