“Regular woman by day, superhero by night!” OK, not really, but close. Junshuan is a Taiwanese woman who works as an office clerk at a technology company by day, and who focuses on her freelance illustration-work by night. Mixing Western art-styles with Eastern, what she produces is oftentimes something that resembles the old “Rorschach-images”, or even the artwork for Metal Gear Solid; the use of diluted ink works perfectly together with the more carefully drawn ink-lines, which creates something both abstract and realistic.

It is clear that Junshuan has taken a liking in drawing Samurais (which are all very cool, yes) but it is the faces of her drawings that I would recommend you take a closer look at. It should also be pointed out that the swift strokes of diluted ink sometimes create a good sense of motion. Check out her work below!

I’m signing off for now. Until…next time!

This next artist, named Jo Chen, is probably one of my favorite illustrators so far on this blog (as is ). This because of her wonderful realistic drawings, paintings and digital art. Her sketches are an inspiration for sure (look at the lines!), and the coloring of her digital art/paintings are so natural their almost unnatural.

Jo Chen is also into Japanese-inspired art and has published her own manga-books. These paintings and drawings, being slightly different from her more realistic ones, are still subjects of admiration.

For more images than what you see here, be sure to check out both Chen’s old and new website:

And now for something completely different from my previous post. Last time, we looked at something that’s pretty far from what I do as an illustrator – this time we’re doing the exact opposite; realistic 2D-drawings. Having read through how this illustrator describes her job and what she aspires for when making an image, I thought to myself: “This is what I want to be doing!”

Oh, and we’re moving to Taiwan.

Alon Chou worked in a game studio, designing 3D-models, when she decided that 2D-drawing was more of her thing. She quit her job, and now she’s working as a freelance illustrator. She compares images to a single-frame from a movie (which stroke a cord with me) and so some of her pictures are actually made with certain movies in mind. Then again, she works for companies that develop games and animation-movies. Without further ado, let’s take a look at some more of her amazing pictures!

Until next time!

Continuing along the course of my last post, I thought it would be interesting to keep venturing out on grounds that, in my case, are mostly unfamiliar. Having almost solely worked with old-school media (like graphite, charcoal, ink etc) my whole life, I never cease to be impressed when looking upon some of the digital artwork out there that illustrators put up. Joshua Zaragoza is one of those illustrators.

Since he is working with both digital painting and photo-manipulation, I don’t want to go too much further into his work, which is mainly photographies (this being an illustration-blog), but I do think that his work are worth checking out in search for inspiration.

Kumustaka? We’re staying in the thousand island- paradise more commonly known as Philippines, and this time we’re gonna take a look at the artwork of Dan Matutina.

Dan Matutina is both a designer and illustrator, and he is based in the Philippines. Now, even though the portrait above is certainly well made and slightly realistic, the majority of Matutina’s drawings/paintings are done in a much different style. If you want a comparison, I would say that they resemble Picasso’s famous cubism, but with shapes that are a little bit closer to real life. They’re very far from the style I draw with myself, but then again – everything can be used as inspiration. And I quite like most of his pictures, especially the series of “two-head-opponents” which I have posted in the gallery bellow.

See you next time!

Armand Serrano was born and raised in Quezon City, Manila. As a young man, he started working for a sub-studio of Hanna-Barbera Studios California, which was based in Manila. He later moved on, working on projects (mainly as a layout-artist) for Marvel, among others, before getting hired by Disney and moving to Florida. Today, he is working as an art-director for Sony Pictures Animation, and his portfolio is filled to the brink with artwork for major feature films (mostly environmental). I have attached some of them bellow, but if you want to see more, I would suggest you check out his website: http://www.armandserrano.com/

Jeremy Enecio was born in Ormoc City (PH), got his BFA in illustration at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore (USA) and is currently residing as a freelance illustrator in New York City. Like Yuko Shimizu, whom we looked at earlier, we here get an illustrator who creates with the heart of his Asian roots, but with the contemporary theme of American society. Hence, the subjects in many of his drawings are taken from American pop-culture. What amazes me and immediately catches my interest, is the level of detail that has been applied to these otherwise parody- looking peaces. Take a look and make your own judgement!

As i mentioned earlier, Singapore does not exactly seem to be the mass-producer of illustrators in Asia. Therefore, we might have to leave for the next country a little earlier than was originally planned. But before we do that, I thought we should have a look at an illustrator that, unlike all the previous ones, actually concentrates on designing prints for t-shirts. His name is Budi Satria Kwan.

Budi Satria Kwan has been making designs for the highly regarded clothing-web-shop “Threadless” for over 6 years now and has under that time gotten 155 of his designs up for print. I actually got interested in his artwork before realizing that they were made for t-shirts, which shows that they are more than just designs. Yes, this means I would very much like one of his printed clothes (for the right price). Check out his work and see if you might want them too. Until next time!

This illustrator, named Stanley Lau, was originally born in Hong Kong, but is currently based in Singapore. He is a co-founder of the digital art studio “Imaginary Friends”, and since he seem to be mainly focused on creating his own version of comic book- and- gaming- characters, this is mirrored in his clients: DC Comics, Capcom, Marvel, Square Enix, etc. (For those interested in videogames, Stanley is now working with Capcom to create the concept art for Street Fighter III).

Yes, we’ve spent a little more time looking at Japanese illustrators than anywhere else, and yes, that’s because I am going there in about two weeks. But it’s time for us to move further. That is, next time. I thought we might finish our illustrative journey to Japan (for now) with a female artist called Yuko Rabbit.

As you might remember, a few days ago we looked into the dark world of Ryohei Hase, so it’s kind of fitting that we continue with Rabbit (pun intended). Like myself, Yuko Rabbit seems to favor drawing people; but like Hase, she also likes to play with her name, adding bunny-ears to some of her characters. Take a look bellow!

PS. Next time we’re heading to……..Singapore! Until then:
