Williams-Sonoma Summer Internship

Summer Internship Program

Product Development & Design 2013

OUR COMPANY

Williams-Sonoma, Inc. is a specialty retailer of home furnishings and gourmet cookware prided for “enhancing the quality of life at home.” We offer high-quality, stylish products for every room in the house: from the kitchen to the living room, bedroom, home office and even the hall closet. Williams- Sonoma, Inc. is a vertically integrated company pursuing business through three channels: retail, catalog and e-Commerce.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Williams-Sonoma, Inc. internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to work in our Product Development department, with a focus on learning the role of a designer within our brands. The goal is provide foundational experience and exposure to a career in design within a retail environment.

 RETAIL PORTION

For the first week of your internship, we will place you in one of our Pottery Barn or Pottery Barn Kids retail stores in the Bay Area. You will gain exposure to our product aesthetic and also have the chance to spend time directly with the customers, seeing firsthand the impact the retail stores have on the overall success of the business.

CORPORATE PORTION

Over the next eight and a half (8.5) weeks you will experience what it is like to be a part of the Product Development Design team who creates artisanal, inspired products to enhance our customer’s lives at home – products they will want to pass from generation to generation. In this internship you will learn about:

Creating each season from ideation to completion.

Using our core products and layering on to them seasonally.

Inspiring our merchant teams to understand the vision of the season and the big ideas that are important for each season.

Driving new fabrications into our collections to keep the assortment fresh and relevant.

DURATION

The 9.5 week program begins on Monday, June 17th and ends on Wednesday, August 21st.

LOCATION

Week 1: Retail stores within the Bay Area (Pottery Barn or Pottery Barn Kids)

Weeks 2 – 9.5: Corporate Headquarters, San Francisco, CA

 QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Undergraduate or Masters in an accredited degree program

Strong verbal and written communication skills

Ability to sketch, draw and ideate

Teamwork oriented

Ability to work independently under tight timelines

Ability to prioritize and multi-task

Proficiency in MAC and PC

Intermediate proficiency with Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

Strong sense of style and ability to develop brand-appropriate concepts informed by relevant industry trends and media content

Ability to work in the San Francisco area for the full 9.5 week program

Passion for the home industry

 POSSIBLE INTERNSHIP PROJECTS

In addition to assistance with daily office functions, an overarching project will be assigned to interns or groups of interns to complete and present at the conclusion of the internship. Projects may include:

Building or digitally composing mock ups during the design process

Preparing boards for presentations

Assisting with specs during spec deadlines

Assisting with commenting on prototypes

Searching the internet for competitor comparison and home design industry research data

Assist with concepting process of upcoming seasonal product

Assist with the development process of product concept to execution

Other projects as assigned

This position is not eligible for Visa sponsorship.
