SCAD Day Fall 2012
The first SCAD Day of our 2012/2013 school year took place on Saturday,
October 20,2012!
The SCAD-Atlanta Student Ambassadors welcomed prospective
students and their families, as well as accompanied them all over campus to
wherever they needed to go. Ambassadors were stationed in key areas
including the DMC (Digital Media Center), ACA Sculpture Facility, and our
residence halls (ACA Residence Hall and Spring House), as well as all over
the main building, 1600 Peachtree ST, NW. There were shuttle tours
continuously throughout the day, with shuttles looping around all of our
buildings, including Ivy Hall!
A new concept was introduced this SCAD Day: instead of various workshops and
activities happening around campus, a “concierge” system was implemented.
With this system, prospective students would first check-in, and then they
were given their own customized list of places they could visit throughout
the day, based on their personal preferences and interests. Ambassadors
found this to be successful, and a different way for prospective students to
experience the campus, based on exactly what they were most interested in
seeing and doing.
This time we had an 88% participation rate and 100% NewBee Shadowing.
According to the post SCAD Day surveys from our ambassadors, they were all
satisfied with their assignments, the day’s schedule, as well as our brand
new teal ambassador shirts and backpacks!

Buzz Bus Visit to Briar Vista Elementary
SCAD students and staff held a surprise Buzz Bus visit at Briar Vista Elementary on Monday, October 24! As a Dekalb County Public School, Briar Vista Elementary School follows the guiding Montessori principle of meeting the needs of the individual student. The school’s mission is to establish a strong foundation for all students by providing a safe, nurturing learning environment, enhanced with the use of developmentally appropriate resources, enabling them to become life-long learners in a rapidly changing society.
SCAD Atlanta volunteers visited Briar Vista Elementary for the first Buzz Bus visit of the 2011-2012 school year! SCAD volunteers recognized Art Teacher, Ms. Nguyen and celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month with her fourth and fifth grade class. Robin Morris, Continuing Education Coordinator II, led a hands-on workshop with a Day of the Dead theme. Students learned about the history of the holiday and discussed creative art techniques. Students drew elaborate designs, brainstormed color schemes, cut out flowers and decorations, used paint and gemstones, and created paper masks to take home! Everyone felt inspired to create a one-of-a-kind mask. Brandon, a student in the class, exclaimed “Art is my favorite class!”
SCAD also surprised Ms. Nguyen with a tremendous donation of free art supplies. These supplies were generously donated during the summer Buzz Bus donation drive from SCAD staff, departments, and students. The art donations included free notebooks, drawing pads, pencils, kneaded erasers, pens, watercolor sets, fabric samples, photo paper, and more! Students also received a Buzz Bus postcard and bee sticker as a keepsake! By the end of the visit, students were requesting signed autographs from Art the Bee and SCAD volunteers!

Susan G. Komen Walk
On Saturday, May 7, 2011 more than thirty SCAD Atlanta students and staff participated in the 2011 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Atlanta.
The participants gathered to meet up at Spring House, and then departed to the starting point at Atlantic Station. Among the diverse student body that participated in this event, Student Ambassadors Linda Chang, Alejandra Monroy, and Mariana River were proud to celebrate the strength and hope of women and fight against breast cancer. As active community members, graphic design students Mariana Rivera and Alejandra Monroy even designed their own t-shirt that showcased their support of the event. Rivera, who has a family member who survived breast cancer, raised the greatest funds among the team with $550 of pledge for the Race for Cure. The participants choose to either run or walk in the 5k race, and SCAD Atlanta team member Genesis Henderson won the first place in Men’s Division with time of 15:59. With 14,728 participants and 629 teams, the Susan G. Komen walk was one of the biggest fundraisers in the Atlanta community and throughout the nation. The total fundraising event totaled to $1,529,333!
Thank you Student Ambassadors for participating in this Spring Quarter community service event.
