My Experience in the 24 Hour Film Race
Written by: Maya Haynes, Television Producing
The second week of my second quarter at SCAD-Atlanta is an experience I will never forget. My Introduction to Television professor asked the class for volunteers to participate in a 24 hour film race which was going to be held that weekend. I raised my hand along with two other classmates because we were the only ones available for that weekend. We were eager television students wanting to help our professor out any way that we could, but we really did not know what we were getting ourselves into.
The weekend of the race arrived and we were excited and nervous. The night of the competition we met in the television studio to receive the instructions and the item that all the entries had to incorporate. We received the message at exactly midnight the topic was love and the item that we had to incorporate was a name tag. Now it was go time, we spent that night setting up the studio and planning out how we would shoot the short film. We also had to checkout equipment, and buy props and food for our talent and crew. We slept maybe two hours in the television studio and got up to start shooting early that morning.
The shoot was very hectic, exciting, and tiring we ran into several setbacks but we figured them out like professionals would. I could not believe I was already producing a short film my second week of school; it was a dream come true. We spent the whole day shooting and editing the film and at midnight we raced to the site where the films had to be turned in. After we turned our film in, we felt accomplished, proud, and relieved.
Though we did not win the contest we were still very proud of ourselves because we stepped up to the plate and tried to make a film as Introduction to Television students in our second week of school. It was reward just being a part of the competition because I learned so much that day about shooting, editing, and production as a whole. That day was also rewarding because I met my college best friends spending that 24 hours with them and we have been inseparable ever since.
