One day I was shopping at the mall and a store manager commented on an outfit I was wearing. The manager was very complimentary on my sense of style and we began talking about my desire to have a career in fashion. I had recently visited the NYC design schools so we discussed my visits and why SCAD was my first choice. Although I have always loved NYC, I didn’t feel the same sense of openness, passion, and encouragement in the NYC schools as I felt at SCAD. I knew from the moment I walked into SCAD, if I worked hard I could be successful.
Since I would be staying in Atlanta the manager encouraged me to contact her favorite designer, Reco Chapple for an internship. I emailed Reco a few times and one day out of the blue he contacted me and gave me an opportunity to work with his team on the Braxton music video shoot. The day was full of so many new experiences and ended with Reco offering me a summer internship. I am thankful for all Reco taught me, as well as SCAD for teaching me how to build on that experience and grow from it.
My first quarter here at SCAD has been great! I met so many inspiring and creative people; especially through joining the club Fashion Haus. I had so much fun being a part of Fashion Haus. I’m especially proud of being elected Fashion Haus’ new Secretary. I had a lot fun with this position fall quarter and look forward to the winter quarter.
One of the best meetings we had this quarter included a portfolio assembly seminar by Professor Jason Bunin. His presentation was intriguing and informative. It was great seeing examples of his work, and hearing what he had to say about his experiences in the fashion industry. I really appreciate him taking the time out of his busy schedule to let us learn from his experiences. It was very inspiring.

On Friday April 19, 2013 SCAD staff, students, and Art the Bee set out to Barnwell Elementary on the school’s Artist Day, to surprise the Art teacher, Mrs. Melissa Nail, and her students with art supplies valued at $2,000, courtesy of SCAD Atlanta’s bookstore Follett.
The school was holding an Artist Day for the students, who earlier in the day got to see a range of artistic talent such as performing and culinary artists, scene designers, musicians, hip hop dancers, painters, and even ice carvers. The SCAD volunteers arrived in the SCAD Shuttle soon after and presented the supplies in the school’s cafeteria. The presentation opened with an introduction from Jennifer Liu, Enrollment Programs Manager, and the group of Student Ambassadors and Admission Student Assistants, who each got the opportunity to introduce themselves by name and career aspiration. Their introductions gave the 386 kids an idea of various exciting careers that can come about from studying different arts. The children were ecstatic to see Art the Bee and even more excited to hear that they were receiving new art goodies! It ended with presenting all the art supplies to the teacher, who from her reaction was very enthusiastic about the donation. “Now you and your amazing students can continue to create masterpieces year-round just like the artists you met today during your Artist Day,” said Jennifer Liu.
The student participants included: Xiaoyan Fan, Andrea Van Hintum, Nathan Pinney, Nino Flores, Demyah Jackson, Shala Boyd, Brandon Bryant, and Carlos Maldonado-Romero. Overall the event went great and SCAD cannot wait to do it again!

My first day of orientation was one of my favorite days of college so far. All of the great things that I learned that day helped me through my experience here at SCAD and will help me throughout my career. They taught us all about time management, safety, and getting your name out there. Collaboration between departments was another big topic that I hope to obtain during my core classes. There were a lot of things that they had already taught me through SCAD’s brochures and online sessions, but I also was taught new things that I didn’t even know could happen. For instance, if you are the main building of SCAD and want someone to walk you back to Spring House, one of the security guards will escort you back to the dorms! The orientation meetings that I chose to attend consisted of guest speakers that gave me a lot of insight into SCAD and I met and talked to a ton of fantastic people that I am still friends with to this day. Once orientation was over for the day, a group of students and I went back to the dorms to relax, hang out, and get to know each other better. It was a great bonding experience and I am so glad that I met such wonderful people. It was a fantastic way to start off the year.
