Cedar Grove Elementary YAA Visit
To wrap up the Winter Quarter SCAD-Atlanta Student Ambassadors Larry, Mae, Xiaoyan, and Maya visited Cedar Grove Elementary School. We conducted a Creative Career presentation for Mrs. Smith’s art class. Creative Career Presentations are when Student Ambassadors present to elementary and middle school students about the opportunities in creative careers, share their SCAD art portfolios, and offer short demos relating to their major.
Mae started off the visit showing the students her photography portfolio. She showed them the difference between food photography and fashion photography. The students were very excited about the food photos.
Larry then talked about Animation he showed his bird animation. The students love the animation and asked to watch the video over several times.
Xioayan then talked to the students about Graphic Design. She showed them her projects that she has done and related it to logos and advertisements that the students see every day.
Maya wrapped up the presentation by explaining how even though each major is different we all have to work together to get a finished product. She used the example of a kids cereal brand by stating how Larry could design the animation for the cereal character, and Xioayan can create the logo and branding, Mae could then photograph the ad campaign, and she could produce and shoot the commercial. The students understood how all the careers and majors connected together.
To continue the theme of collaboration the students were put in groups and designed magnets. The Cedar Grove students were very creative with their designs and it was evident that they were inspired by the visit. They drew characters for animation as well as company logos.
After taking a group photo we gave hugs and said our goodbyes to the Cedar Grove student’s. It was a great way to end the quarter!

Finding Success in a Foundation Class
Written by: Paige Cheshier, Photography
As fall quarter approached, I was so ecstatic and could not wait to begin my SCAD career. Everything had fallen into place perfectly and for the first time, my life finally felt complete. I had my classes all lined up and my schedule planned. There was only one thing that worried me about making my new transition into an arts school; having to face two quarters of drawing.
As a Photography Major, I have never used tools other than a camera to create my work. I knew that this was going to be a new and challenging experience for me and I was cautiously optimistic about beginning Drawing 100. As the weeks progressed, I actually found that my fears were fading and I was truly enjoying the class! I am amazed at how much I have learned in 8 weeks. Now as I move into the final project I feel very confident that the skills that I have learned will carry me through not only Drawing II but into my major classes as well.
I have registered to take Drawing II during the winter quarter and am very excited to take the class. I know that I will learn a lot and am excited to see all of the fun things that I get to add to my “drawing knowledge” tool box!
Princeton Elementary YAA Visit
On Thursday, February 23, 2012 SCAD-Atlanta Student Ambassadors had the pleasure of conducting a hands-on Creative Career Workshop with Ms. McKnight’s 2nd grade class at Princeton Elementary School.
Our Student Ambassadors Jade, Maya, Xioayan, Lydia and Ian were the volunteers for this workshop. They began by introducing themselves and talk about SCAD and their specific majors.
For the first fifteen minutes each student was instructed to design one tile that represented them self.
The students were then given another 15 minutes to design a tile that represented their school. For the last ten minutes the students designed a tile that represented SCAD, using the information that we gave them about our school in our introductions. At the end we put all of the tiles together on a large poster board to represent us all coming together as one.
Lillianna Bernstein, a second grade student at Princeton
Elementary enjoyed drawing their eagle mascot. When I asked about what she learned she said, “I learned that at SCAD you can draw things that you like.” When I asked about her aspirations she said, “ I want to become an artist but first create a lemonade and cookie stand.”
Second grade teacher Dava McKnight liked that we had the children engaged with the activity and that we were very interactive with them. She also appreciated that we were prepared with materials. When I asked about the success of the visit she stated, “I think this visit from the SCAD students helps to heighten their knowledge and make them more aware.”
We wrapped up the visit with Lydia speaking to the Princeton students about what they can do in school now to be successful in art. We all took a group picture with our finished product and were given lots of hugs as we were leaving.
We truly enjoyed our visit at Princeton Elementary!
