Buzz Bus Visit to Briar Vista Elementary

SCAD students and staff held a surprise Buzz Bus visit at Briar Vista Elementary on Monday, October 24!  As a Dekalb County Public School, Briar Vista Elementary School follows the guiding Montessori principle of meeting the needs of the individual student.  The school’s mission is to establish a strong  foundation for all students by providing a safe, nurturing learning environment, enhanced with the use of developmentally appropriate resources, enabling them to become life-long learners in a rapidly changing society.

SCAD Atlanta volunteers visited Briar Vista Elementary for the first Buzz Bus visit of the 2011-2012 school year!  SCAD volunteers recognized Art Teacher, Ms. Nguyen and celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month with her fourth and fifth grade class.  Robin Morris, Continuing Education Coordinator II, led a hands-on workshop with a Day of the Dead theme.  Students learned about the history of the holiday and discussed creative art techniques.  Students drew elaborate designs, brainstormed color schemes, cut out flowers and decorations, used paint and gemstones, and created paper masks to take home! Everyone felt inspired to create a one-of-a-kind mask.  Brandon, a student in the class, exclaimed “Art is my favorite class!”

SCAD also surprised Ms. Nguyen with a tremendous donation of free art supplies.  These supplies were generously donated during the summer Buzz Bus donation drive from SCAD staff, departments, and students.  The art donations included free notebooks, drawing pads, pencils, kneaded erasers, pens, watercolor sets, fabric samples, photo paper, and more!  Students also received a Buzz Bus postcard and bee sticker as a keepsake!  By the end of the visit, students were requesting signed autographs from Art the Bee and SCAD volunteers!
