NewBee Story: Darlien Morales
“One of my biggest concerns when looking for universities regarded finding opportunities to engage in community service. Community Service has been a big part of my life since high school and it is not something I am willing to give up. SCAD truly is a creative university with boundless opportunities! Service Opportunities for Students, an organization here at SCAD, has allowed me to keep volunteering. I was glad to learn that the role that SCAD plays in the community is reinforced through its students’ work; we set the example by giving back to Savannah – our new home.
I recently had the opportunity to participate in Kid’s Café, where I helped children engage in arts and crafts at the Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club. Through this service opportunity, I experienced love, joy, and unity in a whole new level. I learned so much from this experience! It opened my eyes to the need for a positive impact in kids’ lives. To give students this chance to express themselves, to give some love, and to leave some legacy behind is incredible. Sharing my talents, ideas and enthusiasm with others brought out the best in me, as well.
I encourage everyone to volunteer, not only with Kid’s Cafe, but with any other event, since the result will always be reciprocal and beneficial. Volunteering is something that brings diversity to the weekends. It is completely worthwhile, because more than painting pictures with children; we are painting smiles. The experience says more than I could possibly write; so go ahead and volunteer- I bet you won’t regret it!”
