Come to the reception and ask architecture student Dubem Aniebonam what it all means to exercise your gray matter!

On March 4th at noon, foundation studies will hold a reception for the completion of a Design/Build project at Boundary Hall. Ms. Aniebonam created a design in her 3D Design class last winter that was chosen to be fabricated at 15 feet tall. We are very proud of Ms. Aniebonam and encourage everyone to attend and support this outstanding opportunity.

The CNU Carolinas Chapter is instituting a lecture series for different areas of the Carolinas. We are proud to introduce our first lecture as being the nationally recognized author of The Long Emergency, James Howard Kunstler.

The Beaufort, SC Area members have collaborated with the City of Beaufort, Brown Design Studio, and Tucker Building Corporation to bring Kunstler to Beaufort. The lecture will be at 6PM on Wednesday, February 16th at the Technical College of the Lowcountry Auditorium, located at 921 Ribaut Road, Beaufort, SC.

The auditorium is in MacLean Hall, Building 12 on the campus map.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

A special thanks is owed to the City of Beaufort, Brown Design Studio and Tucker Building Corporation in Beaufort for giving us the opportunity to have James Howard Kunstler lecture here in the Carolinas.

The Savannah College of Art and Design presents the fourth annual Art Materials Trade Show, coordinated by the SCAD School of Foundation Studies to fund student scholarships.

Held at the River Club in historic downtown Savannah, the Art Materials Trade Show features professionals and visiting artists in the art and design materials industries who will showcase and demonstrate the best and most up-to-date products relating to art and design, all of which will be for sale to the public at significant discounts.

Industry experts will also offer academic, business-oriented, practical and scientific/technical seminars.

The trade show and seminars are free and open to the public.

Uni-Systems, the leading designer and advocate of kinetic architecture, held a kinetic architecture design competition…the Grand Prize winner as selected by the judges Robert Ivy (editor of Architectural Record), author Michael Fox, and Uni-Systems founder Cyril Silberman is SCAD Architecture alumni Brian Cole Henson. The SCAD School of Building Arts is pleased to announce two new appointments beginning summer quarter. Brian Wishne, former dean of the School of Building Arts, becomes chair of urban design, and former SCAD Professor Herbert J. Brito becomes dean of the School of Building Arts.

Prior to joining SCAD in 2008, Wishne was chair of the department of architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a faculty member in the School of Architecture and Interior Design at the University of Cincinnati. Holding a B.A. from Knox College and an M.Arch. from Princeton University, as well as considerable professional experience, Wishne brings expertise valuable to further growth and development of the urban design program at SCAD.

Brito, who holds both a Bachelor of Design in Architecture and a Master of Arts in Architecture from the University of Florida, taught at SCAD from 1979-1985, developing the curricula for the architecture, historic preservation and interior design programs of study. He then taught at Georgia State University, Brenau University and the Atlanta College of Art, as well as other universities. His certifications include National Council for Interior Design Qualification and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and he is an associate with the American Institute of Architects, past board member and vice president of the American Society of Interior Designers, board of visitors member of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation and a patron and member of many arts organizations. He has won numerous awards for his work, which has been widely published and exhibited.

Brito also is principal of Brito, LLC, an interior design firm specializing in high-end residences, historic preservation projects, hospitality commissions, and specialty design projects throughout the United States, the Caribbean and Europe. He also has served as a studio director, project director, preservation planner and architectural historian with a variety of firms and agencies.

Temporary/Permanent Relief Housing

Submission Deadline: May 10, 2010 before 5pm Eastern Time
The AIA Young Architects Forum (YAF) and the AIA Committee on Design (COD) invites architects, students, and allied design professionals to submit sketches to the international 2010 YAF/COD Ideas Competition: Temporary/Permanent Relief Housing. In this year’s unique sketch competition, submitters are asked to explore the issue of temporary relief housing that could have a permanent function, through a concept design problem.
SUBMISSION
Entries will be submitted electronically through an online submission site. Submissions will consist of drawings and renderings presented in PDF format. All materials must be uploaded through the submission site before by 5pm ET on May 10, 2010. CHALLENGE
Design temporary relief housing for refugees from natural or other disasters using sustainable strategies and following the Living Building Challenge. The proposed solutions should provide housing for approximately 500 displaced families as well as the necessary support services.
While successful site adaptability is a key goal and criterion for this Competition, the specific site to demonstrate the solution consists of approximately 200 acres. It includes the Astrodome and the surrounding parking lots. Entrants may include modifications to the structure of the Astrodome in their proposal, may allow the Astrodome to remain untouched and focus solely on the surface parking areas, or may have some combination of the two. Individual entries may focus their solutions on the provision of either temporary or permanent housing. Entrants are encouraged to address issues of uncertainty associated with either types of housing and with temporary solutions that become permanent.

RECOGNITION
Winners will be announced and will have their work exhibited at the 2010 AIA National Convention in Miami June 10–12. Selected entries will be displayed on the AIA Web site.
