Task: As homework over the weekend, I would like each of you to do some research into artist/designer blogs and identify several you find interesting. You are highly encouraged to seek out artists/designers in your field of study or related fields. What makes some blogs stand out more than others? Are blogs more commonly found in some art/design fields than others? What did you hope to find that you could not? What did you find that surprised you?

 

First blog is for the artist Moby, basically it’s a blog of strange and beautiful architecture in Los Angeles. It inspires me, because architecture has always stood my dream career path. His pictures include amazing and beautiful architectural building that inspires me to imagine how to create modernized building for the future. Moby is one of the famous photographers in LA.

Second is my hobby or may I call it my passion FOOTBALL(soccer in USA). I can’t remember a day in my life that football wasn’t involved as the day passed, whether it was a discussion, watching a game, playing a game, or even just thinking of it. This blog has every single news of the football universe. It inspires me when I read players interviews and press conference, because it teaches me how they think, how to act under pressure, how to lead, how to act within a team, and mainly how to make the right decisions. It’s not just a game, It’s way of life.

Sound Map

Task: Sit in a location for one hour. Document all the sounds you hear and the times you heard them. Mark the approximate locations of the sounds in relation to you on a map. Your map can take ANY form you like (graphic image, drawing/painting, sculptural, video, poem, etc.) but must be creative and visually interesting!

Jack & Jill

Task: On six separate 8”X8” sheets of Bristol board, create visual equivalents for each part of the nursery rhyme “Jack & Jill” (listed below) by using the dingbats and/or punctuation marks given on the assignment sheet. These marks, symbols, and pictograms can be used individually or combined to develop a visual metaphor. You may use a photocopier to enlarge the selected graphic images to the appropriate size of the given space, or you may enlarge the symbols freehand (stay as true to the original graphics as possible.) Remember this is NOT a collage project though you may opt to use collage elements as part of your concept. Execute your solutions in black and white, unless your concept dictates otherwise. Include the words for the specified section of the nursery rhyme as a part of your design, or simply let the images speak for themselves.

Critique: I didn’t do it with my group, because I was absent due to brother’s sickness(food poison).

Process: 

1)Took 6 bristol boards and cut them to 8×8 sizes

2)Scanned symbols paper(http://blog.scad.edu/awaldvog/files/2011/07/JJ-icons.jpg) and re-sized particular symbols that were hard to draw with free hand

3)Used tracing paper to draw the symbols on bristol boards

Map Exploration

Task: Start with a map – any kind of map. Think about the logic of its purpose. Now do something to deliberately negate its function: cut it up, switch the pieces around, glue it back together, combine it with drawings, photos, charts, diagrams, symbols, pieces of paper from the street. Cut holes in it. Shoot holes in it. Tape it, mask it, tear it, shred it, fold it, crumple it, leave it out in the rain. Confuse it. Run over it, Xerox it, fragment it, sleep with it, obscure it, cloud it, camouflage it. Write on it. Draw and paint on it: pencil, ball point pen, felt-tips, spray paint, motor oil, purée of carrots, finger paint, ink, charcoal, lipstick, blood, crayons. Add places to it: atolls, mountains, clouds and sky, stars, weather, heaven.

Critique: Most liked the idea and the design, but the map lacked the idea of  ”why did I chose to do this?”. One said it looked like a map from a McDonald’s happy meal. Overall need to show my personality on my work.

1)I created island shapes from the map and glued them on the calligraphy paper.

2)Used the black pen marker to write texts, shapes, and draw skull

3)Use india ink to make spots of ink to make the map look old

4)Soaked the map with coffee to give the map a brownish color to make it look old

ABCs & 123s

This is my favorite project of the quarter. Our task to photograph the letters of the alphabet and numerals 1-9 as found naturally occurring in your environment. We’re not allowed to take the easy way of finding the letters in signs or on the sides of buildings. We’re supposed to look closer, example: the leaves on the trees, the cracks in the sidewalk, wings of butterflies, etc…

Critique Notes: Overall all letters and numbers are visible except for the numbers 2,5, and 6 are not acceptable because I took the easy way.

Easiest ones to find were the number 1 and letter O

Hardest ones to find were the number 2,5, and 6. So I took the easy way and took photos of signs :(

Most pictures are cropped, flipped, and rotated from its original image to make the letter be more visible.

I used Photoshop to create the final design for the project.

Project 2: Repetition Grid

(Combine principles of form and repetition on complex grids.)

 

  • First step: Draw 75 motif thumbnails

  • Second step: Choose a motif and decide whether to create 100(1″ x 1″) tiles or 25(2″ x 2″) on 10″ x 10″ size to create a design. Then, draw a basic grid with 25(2″ x 2″)  or 100(1″ x 1″)identical spaces. Place the motif tiles on the grid lines and create 5 different interesting design. I chose 100 tiles, because it gives me the opportunity to create several designs.

Step 3: Choose one of the 5 designs and glue it on to a tracing paper with grid lines. Then create several inking plans (From your selected design) on tracing paper

Critique Notes:

  • Small details are very important.
  • Use 8 x 12 bristol board instead of 9 x 12.
  • Craftsmanship is important.
  • Make sure to represent your work clean.
  • Focal point should not be in the middle.

Hello SCAD!

Architecture has always stood out as the perfect career path for me. It was at the age of nine that I truly understood what architecture was. Travelling to many countries has allowed me to experience a variety of different cultures, along with some of the most historic and outstanding pieces of architecture. This exposure has reinforced my decision for selecting it as a field of study. I have always been fascinated by different cultures and the architecture of the many countries I visited. My mother, who is an architect herself, has influenced the way I perceive architecture as an art form. This is one of the main reasons why I have chosen to pursue my education in this field.

My name is Khaled Nahas, and I’m from Saudi Arabia. Beside Architecture, soccer is my passion since I was kid. Sports have contributed a great deal in shaping my personality. I developed sportsmanship, team work, and cooperation through sports. Most importantly, I learned the skills of commitment and leadership.  

The pedagogical facilities and student oriented atmosphere in SCAD offers are most suitable for enhancing my academic profile. I am confident that SCAD with its solid and rich program will help me fulfill my inclinations of becoming a successful architect. I have great plans to make a difference in my home country Saudi Arabia, and to introduce a whole new level of architectural innovations and new perspective I’m sure to gain through a fruitful experience at SCAD.
