Now that Halloween is over, I’m already starting to get into the holiday season. And this year I couldn’t be more excited about Barney’s window displays. “Electric Holiday” is the title for the new Disney theme, in which Minnie Mouse dreams of becoming a Paris fashion model. Tons of famous fashion figures are getting a Disney makeover and even the iconic Disney characters themselves got a new look, which has actually been causing quite the stir due to their new drastically thin body sizes. I hardly think it’s controversial, I just see it as these characters getting the “fashion croquis” treatment.

“When unveiled to the public on Nov. 14, Barneys’ Madison Avenue flagship will feature a three-dimensional electric light show; a moving art short film in the window displays that will turn Disney’s most favorite heroes into runway supermodels and fashion regulars into Disney types, and an original score by Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino.

The short film centers around Minnie Mouse’s fantasy to be at the Paris shows. There she comes across key Disney characters — Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Daisy Duck, Cruella de Vil, Princess Tiana and Snow White — all decked out in unique designer clothes as they make their way down the runway.”

Needless to say, I’M SO EXCITED.

I’ve always been a huge fan of them, from the ones to Target to H&M and even Sephora. I think collaborations are a great idea, allowing companies to sell products they wouldn’t normally sell and providing something new and different for their consumers. Here’s a few of my favorite collaborations to date.

“I am so thrilled to be working with Target on a collection that brings my designs to a wider audience,” said Gurung. “This collection was inspired by love, and if Target’s guests can feel even a little bit of the love that I felt while I was designing this collection, then I will consider it a job well done.”

Mark your calendars: The line will be available from February 10 through March 23 with apparel running from $19.99 to $199.99 and accessories going for $12.99 to $39.99.

I’ll be honest, I’m normally not a huge follower of blogs. I have my own tumblr that I update for myself and that’s about it. Everyone once in a while I might stumble upon a cool post on a cool blog and I’ll admire it for a minute then never look at that blog again. However, about a year ago I came across a unique blog with a very interesting concept.

“textbook.tumblr.com” is (in their own words) …

“Ever read a book and formed a perfect image of the character in your head? So have I, and that’s why I started this blog. Whenever I read something I have a precise portrait of the characters in my head, every detail. It’s no secret that there are major parallels between fashion, literature, history and music but the connection lives in so many different ways. On Textbook, I aim to show it by styling some crazy editorials for your favorite heroes and heroines.”

If anyone knows me, they know how big of a geek I am when it comes to classic characters and famous books & movies. In fact, I’m currently reading the Wizard of Oz series (a whopping 17 books in total) and I’m addicted to superhero movies. So when I found a blog that posts about what Hermione Granger would wear if she was a high fashion witch in our time, I was hooked. Here’s a look at some of my favorite characters and their looks, courtesy of TEXTBOOK.

Alice, Alice in Wonderland

When it comes to branding, I usually imagine how a single logo can call upon countless ideas and images. When you see the Chanel logo, you immediately picture the quilted bags, tweed jackets, and the little black dress. When you see the Target bullseye, you imagine the massive store with all of its cute items and great deals.

It’s also pretty crazy to think that one brand has the potential to monopolize the industry it’s in and become synonymous with the product it sells. For example; underwear. When most people think of underwear shopping, they think Victoria’s Secret. This company has managed to brand the entire experience of shopping for under garments, from getting fitted for the perfect bra to the signature pink and red bags you take your purchases home in.

In another smart venture, Victoria’s Secrets started “PINK”, a cute and comfortable underwear and pajama line geared towards a younger consumer. They ignited the infamous “5 for $25″ panty deal and also recently began selling items based on popular college and major sports teams. Now, this company offers tons of branded items from perfume to makeup and even athletic wear. Even their models are branded; garnering them the notorious ”Victoria’s Secret Angels”.

It seems Victoria’s Secret thought of everything to turn shopping for underwear into a causal, everyday errand. With workers conservatively dressed in all black, this brand took something that used to be deemed risqué or distasteful and made it a classy experience with an environment that empowers women’s self-esteem by encouraging them to embrace their inner “sexy” appeal. Victoria’s Secret has dominated the undergarment and loungewear industries and has proved to be a brand that will only definitely thrive over time.

I knew the new “Little Black Dress” collection would be no different. What I really loved about it was, despite its name, this exhibition featured some of the best black dresses ever created. They weren’t necessary “little” but they were the epitome of a “black dress”. They even threw in the classic all-lace button up dress worn by Marc Jacobs and later parodied by Seth Meyers at the CFDA Awards. And if that wasn’t enough, the museum was gracious enough to feature a small number of SCAD student designs from last year’s fashion show. Not too shabby.

After just recently finishing an extensive project on the prolific designer Sonia Rykiel, all I can think about it her timeless sweater that is still around today. Rykiel pioneered the graphic sweater by being the first designer to put words and images on the outside of the garment. You can find imitations of her work at countless retailers like H&M, Forever 21, Target and high-end labels like Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui. One thing is for certain, the Sonia sweater is going nowhere for a long time.

To be completely honest, I am so annoyed when people are inspired by the most obvious things. I hate to say it, but if I hear one more fashion designer say that they were inspired by flowers or a certain decade, I just might lose it. Therefore, I make it a priority to find the most unique, odd, or random things to be inspired by. That way, you become truly one-of-a-kind. For example, when someone says “Hey, did you see that military inspired collection?”, no one is going to know who and what they’re talking about because there have been literally hundreds of militant collections. But when someone says, “Oh my god, did you see that amazing psychadelic cowboy collection?”, everyone is going to know exactly what they’re talking about. That’s my goal.

As I said earlier, I really love finding inspiration in the outlandish and unexpected. So far, in my time here at SCAD, I have created mock fashion collections based on Jack the Ripper, the children’s book “Harold and the Purple Crayon”, Grimm fairy tales, and plastic surgery. And while my major may not be fashion design and therefore I cannot apply my unique inspirations to garments, I can still apply them to my hopeful career as a fashion show producer. To me, the whole simple white up and down runway, while a classic, is getting a little old. I hope to create completely one of a kind runways that no one will ever forget. Because the way I see it, so much hard work and dedication went into making the unbelievable collections that we see on the runways at fashion week that those amazing garments should be showcase in just an equal of a platform. While I know budgets can be an issue, there are still so many ways to create a memorable catwalks that parallel the collections. For example, I honestly believe that the Spring 2012 Louis Vuitton show would not have been nearly as breathtaking if the models hadn’t have been riding on a giant merry-go-round before taking the runway.

Tying this all back to inspiration, I just hope to one day be able to sit down with the designer I’m working with at the conception of their collection. Hopefully, I’ll be able to help them establish a completely original inspiration source that I can turn into a truly amazing runway show.
