TEXTBOOK Blog

I’ll be honest, I’m normally not a huge follower of blogs. I have my own tumblr that I update for myself and that’s about it. Everyone once in a while I might stumble upon a cool post on a cool blog and I’ll admire it for a minute then never look at that blog again. However, about a year ago I came across a unique blog with a very interesting concept.

textbook.tumblr.com” is (in their own words) …

“Ever read a book and formed a perfect image of the character in your head? So have I, and that’s why I started this blog. Whenever I read something I have a precise portrait of the characters in my head, every detail. It’s no secret that there are major parallels between fashion, literature, history and music but the connection lives in so many different ways. On Textbook, I aim to show it by styling some crazy editorials for your favorite heroes and heroines.”

If anyone knows me, they know how big of a geek I am when it comes to classic characters and famous books & movies. In fact, I’m currently reading the Wizard of Oz series (a whopping 17 books in total) and I’m addicted to superhero movies. So when I found a blog that posts about what Hermione Granger would wear if she was a high fashion witch in our time, I was hooked. Here’s a look at some of my favorite characters and their looks, courtesy of TEXTBOOK.

if you’ve studied art or been to fashion school, then you’ve no doubt seen tons of projects inspired by alice’s adventures in wonderland. i admit, one (or more) of my finals was based on alice and her adventures through the rabbit hole, simply because it gives you liberty to design whatever you like. alice is no doubt a free spirit, she was adventurous before her adventure and certainly wiser, stronger and bolder when she awoke. i think everybody imagines alice’s style as girly, imaginative and freeing. she’s not afraid of color (or much else as we learned in her story) and has no concern over what other people think. after all, her style icons are the mad hatter, that crazy rabbit and the hookah smoking caterpillar.

so with a heavy military and survival vibe coming from a few shows at couture week my mind wandered to athena, goddess of wisdom and battle. she was zeus’ favorite daughter and is without doubt one of the most famous of olympian gods. i don’t have time to get into her whole story but you can bet she had a whole battle wardrobe going on, complete with her ever present owl, spear and helmet.1: to battle!: dress by thimister, scarf by jean paul gaultier, shoes by valentino

atticus finch is one of the wisest characters ever written. there’s not question that he was intelligent based in his law career and he counseled his children well in their adventures. a goodhearted, straight laced man, he appears reliable in any situation. atticus seems to be the type of person that nobody wants to be but yet, wishes they were. you know, the type that stands up for all things good and moral regardless of the situation. his tireless defense of an obviously innocent man facing a racist town will go down as one of the most epic civil rights battles in literature.

cruella de vil is one of my all time favorite villains. not so much for what she does (i can’t condone skinning 101 dalmation puppies for a coat) but because of the way she carried herself. i feel like it comes through much better with glenn close’s rendition than in the cartoon. she’s pretty hilarious and always made me laugh. heartless to the core, she would stop at nothing to get what she wanted. no matter how you slice it, that is an admirable quality. and of course, being the head of her own fashion house “house of de vil” is just icing on the cake. when it comes to her style there are obvious characteristics, exaggeration, fur and intimidation. as such, the fall 09 collections were an obvious bet, cold and dour.1: “what kind of sycophant are you?” dress by fendi, fur by jean paul gaultier, boots by alexander mcqueen, headpiece by lanvin2: “congratulations, you’ve all won gold silver and bronze in the moron olympics”: dress by givenchy, fur by fendi, shoes and gloves by lanvin3: “you’ve won the battle but i’m about to win the wardrobe”: dress by costume national, fur neck piece by christian lacroix, tights and shoes by chanel, clutch by fendi
