For the map project, I first took a map of New Orleans. I cut it up, put marks with oil pastels on it, and tried to stain it with ink. I tried to burn a piece, but it got burnt completely because I did not put it out fast enough. The ink staining looked bad because the ink was too dark. I tried to dilute the ink, but then it didn’t stain enough. I ended up finding little packets of soy sauce in our dorm which I then used to stain my map. I tilted it, and when the droplets ran down the paper they reminded me of rain. So I ended up using the theme of precipitation for my completed piece. I cut up the messed up pieces of the map and made them into paper snowflakes.

I glued them with rubber cement to black construction paper to make them stand out and then to a bigger piece, which I then glued to a board. Then I poured soy sauce on the top and let it drip down. I made lines with masking tape to represent the downpour of rain as well.

CRITIQUE NOTES: The class liked my theme of precipitation and the usage of tape. The teacher said that the tape was a little rough in places, but overall added to the picture.

I decided to sit in my dorm room for an hour. The most recognizable sounds that I heard were the clicking of the mouse buttons on my roommates’ computers, faint music coming from our neighbors’ room, slamming doors, banging on the wall, the air conditioner, the fridge, footsteps from the hallway, tapping from our neighbors above us, birds chirping outside, and voices.

I illustrated the sounds I heard and colored them based on how far they were from me. The more pink an object is, the closer it was. The more blue, the farther.

It seems there are more blogs of Illustrators than Visual Designers. With Visual Design, there are more collection blogs, where the blog moderator links to interesting videos and interviews.

One blog I found was http://kaleblechowski.tumblr.com/
This is a blog of a Visual Effects student in Germany. He has recently done a 6 minute film for a class, and he has many posts about his process and experience.

Another blog is http://mrdiv.tumblr.com/
This is a blog of a graphics designer. He posts his work, and he has done a collaboration video with a music artist.

A third blog I found is http://purenonsens.tumblr.com/
This is a blog of a Polish Illustrator. She posts her work, but she also posts music and things that inspire her.

Mostly I found that blogs had the work of the artist and their experiences working on projects. However, some blogs also had inspiration and various photography that helped inspire the artist.

I picked the 5th one because I liked the shapes created by the meeting edges the most, and there was a lot of variety in the shapes.

Inking plans:

I liked the second one, but the border felt out of place. I kept the upper left part in the 3rd plan, but I changed some stuff and added more black in the lower right to balance out the smaller concentrated parts. I went with the improved design for the final piece.

Final:

I do not have any critique notes because I was absent from the critique.

Here are the four final pieces, cut out of construction paper and glued to 8″x10″ bristol

1:

2:

3:

4:

I chose 1, 2, and 4 because they reminded me of landscapes and had an interesting sense of depth. I chose 3 because it was simple but interesting, and I liked the way the top line mimicked the outer curve of the spiral.

Critique Notes:

General: Figure-ground reversal is when the negative space can begin to feel like positive space, and the other way around. Craftsmanship is important, and paper edges need to be smooth and level. No stray pencil marks or bits should be present. The focal point should be clear, and should normally be away from the center of the page.

Specific: Piece #3- has figure-ground reversal which is good, good line quality, interesting shapes created. Piece #4- good curves in the background, top edge should not be the perforated torn out edge, should be trimmed.

Redesign:

I chose to redesign piece #2 because I felt that the focal point was a little too close to the center of the piece. The new design has the focal point shifted down away from the center.

The first one needed to be made up of horizontal and vertical lines only, the second one diagonals only, the third one curved lines only, and the last one had to combine all these types of lines.

(Sorry for the quality! After a long and unsuccessful fight with my roommate’s scanner, I had to resort to taking pictures with my camera, which likes to focus on a tiny portion of a picture and blur the rest)

Hello! My name is Anastasiya Klyuyeva, but you can call me Tia. I was born in Kiev, Ukraine, but I moved with my family to Birmingham, Alabama.

I hope to study Illustration here at SCAD, but I’m not fully decided yet about my major. I am 18 , and this is my second semester here. I hope to get better at conveying ideas through pictures and fully capturing mood and emotion in my pieces.

My hobbies include reading, playing piano and guitar, and hiking. My favorite book would probably have to be Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer, although I love Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close almost the same amount! I also really enjoy music and listen to pretty much anything, but I particularly love music with Balkan or Gypsy influence.
