Sound Advice: David Van Slyke

As a sound designer David is sought after for the creative force he brings to each project. He works extensively with directors who know that sound, huge and detailed, literal and surreal create 40% of the impact of a film. David has been a pioneer in the creation of digital workflow has worked on multiple digital platforms for SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER BROTHERS, and FOX on a wide range of award winning film and television projects. He has been honored numerous times with nominations by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Motion Picture Academy, The Motion Picture Sound Editors guild and recently by the Hollywood Post Alliance. He has won an EMMY, OSCAR (sound editing team), GOLDEN REELS, and a HPA award. He has owned a company called SLICK SOUNDS for over 10 years doing features, commercials, games, interactive media, and a television Jerry Bruckheimer show called CSI.

Bob Heiber will be giving a lecture on the art of Audio Preservation and Restoration. He will also be discussing internship opportunities with Chase Audio. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about an alternative career path within our field.

Winter 2009:
Vanessa Theme Ament
Room 201/Recording Studio - 1/16/09 - 10a-2p
Vanessa Theme Ament will be giving a short lecture followed by a workshop on the art of Foley walking. The lecture will begin at 10am in room 201 of Hamilton Hall and will last for about an hour. At 11am Vanessa will move to the Recording Studio and begin working with students on Foley technique. Space is limited to work with Vanessa and a sign up sheet for slots will be available beginning at 9:30am on the 16th in room 201. Those that do not receive a slot to work with Vanessa are invited to watch the workshop.
Greg Hedgepath
Studio A/Room 132 - 2/6/09 - 10a-12p & 2p-5p, 2/7/09 5p-8p
Sound Designer Greg Hedgepath (Incredible Hulk, Punisher: War Zone) will be giving three guest lectures.
The first lecture will be in Studio A from 10a-12p on Feb 6th. Greg will be giving a general overview of working in the industry and talking about his experiences as a Sound Designer and Supervising Sound Editor.
The second lecture will be in the Screening Room from 2p-5p on Feb 6th where Greg will be demonstrating his techniques and delving into more advanced topics.
The third lecture will be in the Screening Room on Feb 7th from 5p-8p. This lecture will be a repeat of the 2p lecture from the day before.
Seating is limited for the Screening Room lectures and a sign up sheet will be posted for both. Please sign up for only ONE of these lectures. Failure to follow this rule will result in your name being removed from both sign up lists. The lecture in Studio A will have plenty of seating and there is no need to sign up in advance for that lecture.
Grad Students and Seniors will have priority for sign up. Grad Students should email aes@scad.edu between February 2nd and February 3rd. Seniors can sign up by emailing on February 3rd. Beginning on Wednesday, February 4th the remaining seats will be available to the rest of the student body. The sign up sheet will be posted at 10:30am on February 4th outside Leslie McNeill office in Hamilton Hall.
Sound Art Showcase
Studio A - 3/6/09 – 6:30p-9:30p
PASO presents the Sound Art Showcase in Studio. Over the first weekend of March various Sound Art projects will be featured. Among these projects will be work from the SNDS 736: Sound Art class and the SNDS 739: Sound Design Seminar class. A Sound Art Installation will also be featured in the showcase as the culmination of a Graduate Independent Study project.

Mastering Audio: David Van Slyke

David F. Van Slyke is a highly sought after Hollywood Sound Designer who brings a unique creative vision to each project. He works extensively with directors who know that sound creates at least 40% of the impact of a film. David has been a pioneer in the creation of digital workflow and has worked on multiple digital platforms for SONY, Universal, Warner Brothers, and Fox on a wide range of award winning film and television projects. He has been honored numerous times with sound nominations and he has won an Emmy, several Golden Reels, and two Hollywood Post Alliance Awards. He is a principle in the sound company called Slick Sounds, which for over 11 years has been sound designing features, commercials, games, interactive media, and television.
The year 2009 marked the 200th episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. David has been the exclusive sound designer on CSI for over 200 hours of television entertainment. The 200th episode, directed by the legendary Billie Friedkin, included 128 hours of sound work in 8 days.
