SCAD Schools of Performing Arts and Dramatic Writing present “Dog Costumes”

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design Schools of Performing Arts and Dramatic Writing present “Dog Costumes” by DWRI student David Ruzicka, November 6-7 at the Mondanaro Theater, 217 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

“Dog Costumes,” directed by award-winning actor and SCAD performing arts professor Laurence Ballard, is an ensemble comedy about what happens when humans look to canine kind for examples of good behavior.

A group of apparent strangers collide in a spontaneously mutating writing workshop, in a place more than a little off-kilter yet oddly close to home. This surreal first encounter sends ripples across their lives, exposing surprising connections and showing viewer and character alike that things are not as they seem. The audience will learn about basic conversation in foreign languages, Rubik’s cubes, South Carolinian customs, character creation, club spirit and exciting new developments in gender relations.

There may even be some song and dance.

Ballard has offered two quotes, capturing the spirit of the show:

“(…) theater is an art only in so far as it questions its own process - if it dies not, it falls into the category of clichés or deteriorates into imitation, pure and simple. It was therefore necessary to accompany theater practice with a reflection on that same practice. And to share the results with others. For if it is impossible to create creators, it is possible, indeed it is vital, to show theater people, different ways through which they may reach that creating state without which there is no theater. (…)”

Constantin Stanislavski

Ralph: If any of the Raccoons ever get sick, it’ll be my responsibility to go and visit them.

Alice: Oh, that is a very important responsibility, Ralph. You better start now and find out what the visiting hours are at Bellevue.

Ralph: That did it, Alice - that did it. You have just broken the camel’s back with that straw. You have ridiculed my brother Raccoons. You have just made fun of something very big that’s close to my heart.

Alice: The only thing big that’s close to your heart is your stomach.

–”The Honeymooners”

Performances are at 8 p.m., and are free and open to the general public.
